The Shelley story begins about 1860 when the Wileman family, owners of the Foley works, a large pottery between Longton and Fenton in Staffordshire, England, built a second pottery for the purpose of producing fine china. Wileman & Company was formed in 1872 to run the Foley China Works (replaced J. F. Wileman). Wares produced in the new works were labelled with unique backstamps, in 1910 the Shelley backstamp replaced Wileman and Co. backstamps.

This rare set of tea ware were made at the Foley works in 1894. A lovely Wileman Gainsborough shape Cake plate decorated with hand tinted art nouveau poppies and finished with sponged gold.
