Stoke-on -Trent

The Potteries, one long sprawling conurbation, the core being Burslem then Tunstall, Hanley, Stoke-upon-Trent, Longton and, to a lesser extent, Fenton. These six towns were amalgamated to form the city of Stoke-on-Trent. During the seventeenth century the community of potters working around Burslem began to use coal which was abundantly available, outcropping on the crests of ridges throughout the area now known as the Staffordshire Potteries.
